Based on the classic
children's story by L. Frank Baum, 'The Wizard Of Oz' follows the story of
Dorothy, a young girl from a farm in Kansas, brought up by her Aunt Em and
Uncle Henry. Dorothy is knocked out during a hurricane, and is transported
to a strange new world in her house, which lands by chance on the Wicked
Witch Of The East. This is witnessed by the Wicked Witch Of The West, her
sister, who vows to have her revenge on Dorothy.
Anxious to return home, Dorothy is instructed to take the Wicked Witch Of The East's ruby slippers and to 'follow the yellow brick road' by the Good Witch Of The North and the Munchkins, a colourful race who live at the beginning of the path, in order to ask the Wizard Of Oz to return her safely home. Dorothy follows the path, where she encounters a Scarecrow, a Tin Woodsman and a Lion. The three characters join her on the road to the Emerald City because each has a request for the great Wizard; the Scarecrow wishes he had a brain, the Tinman would like a heart, and the Lion wants courage. However, the journey is perilous, as the Wicked Witch attempts to capture Dorothy and exact her revenge! The four friends overcome various perils, including the Jitterbugs, who dance people to death, but are eventually caught out by the Wicked Witch. When all seems lost, Dorothy & co. cunningly defeat the Witch, and hastily depart for the Emerald City, home of the great Oz. Upon their arrival, Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman and the Lion are informed that the great Oz will not see them. They manage to find their way to the Wizard's chamber, however, only to discover that he is not a real Wizard, but a fraud! Dorothy breaks down, and the 'Wizard' succumbs, granting the wishes of the Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion. Unfortunately, he cannot help Dorothy return to Kansas. At this point, the Good Witch Of The North returns and informs Dorothy that all she needs to do is click her heels together and repeat the line 'There's no place like home', as this will activate the ruby slippers. Dorothy wakes up and discovers that she is safely back home, although it appears that her fantastical journey was all a dream... |
